We are an international group of scholars dedicated to the integration of the history of science and the philosophy of science.
The Committee for Integrated HPS was established in 2006. Our main activity so far has been the biennial conference series “&HPS” on integrated History and Philosophy of Science. Seven successful conferences have been held so far, in Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Bloomington, Athens, Vienna, Edinburgh, and Hannover. Building on the success of the &HPS conferences, we are currently also considering other possible activities.
Our next conference, &HPS8, was to be held at Virginia Tech on 15-17 July 2020, on the theme of “From Unification to Pluralism”. However, due to concerns relating to the coronavirus pandemic, this meeting will be converted into an offline workshop for accepted papers, culminating in a preprint conference proceedings. Authors and poster presenters will be notified of the schedule for submitting work to be considered for the preprint archive. Authors will receive two reviews of their work, and will be given the opportunity to revise before final consideration. The pre-print and journal publications of Integrated History and Philosophy of Science (&HPS) since 2007 will be made available on a new comprehensive website, which will be created by Jutta Schickore and her team at Indiana University. Papers and posters from the 2020 workshop will be featured on this website, along with publications arising from other &HPS conferences through the years. Work on the website and workshop is generously supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
We continue to mourn the death of Professor Jean Gayon, who was a key member of our Committee and a great inspiration to numerous scholars and students of history and philosophy of science worldwide. A tribute to his life and work, by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, can be found here.
